5 Essential Time Management Techniques

5 Essential Time Management Techniques

We all want to maximise our productivity and accomplish our goals, so why aren’t we paying enough attention to time management techniques?

As the Christmas period fast approaches and work schedules get increasingly hectic, it’s important to do all that we can to ensure we have a work-life balance. With this, we are sharing our five time management techniques to help you work smart, relieve stress and better your work-life balance.

  1. Plan your day

The best advice we can give is that you organise your time. At Bain and Gray we love writing lists, and we do this by ranking our tasks based on when the deadline is and how much time each task will take. In this way we can identify the most important tasks and spend a sufficient amount of time working on these, ensuring that we are meeting deadlines.

  1. Ask for help

Divide and conquer. Don’t forget that your colleagues are there to support you and may be able to help you with your tasks. If this is the case, kindly ask if your colleague wouldn’t mind helping you out if they have the time. Teamwork is especially important when it comes to getting things done.

  1. Track your time

Keep track of how long you are spending on each of your tasks. If you are spending more time than you had scheduled for, you may need to rearrange your schedule or move on to a new task. Tracking your time will also allow you to identify where you are falling behind.

  1. Learn to say no

Learn to say no. It is important to know when you are working at your limit and ensure you don’t take on any additional tasks that may cause you unnecessary stress.

  1. Manage your distractions

While you may stop to have a quick chat with your colleague every now and then, it is worth remembering that it takes 23 minutes to refocus after an interruption. Bearing this in mind, you should keep your distractions to a minimum throughout the working day.
