Abby’s “invaluable” work experience at Mckinsey

Oxford Media & Business School student, Abby Butcher, tells us about her fantastic work experience at McKinsey’s that we helped set her up with.

I left school in the summer of 2017 having completed my A Levels and with an offer of a place at university to study Business Management that I deferred until 2018. During that year I went to work in an office. It was during this time that I began to question whether university was the right choice for me. I found that I was enjoying working life but I was frustrated by my lack of experience in many office practices. It was then that I decided to look into other ways to improve my skills to enable me to pursue a career in business.

I had heard about Oxford Media & Business School from a friend and I decided to look into it. The Personal Assistant Course is highly regarded by a wide variety of employers and, having looked at the course content, I realised that this was the perfect alternative to university and would give me the skills I would need to follow the career path I wanted to take.

The full time course is 9 months, during which time you are taught the skills required to become a PA. These include letter and report writing, telephone technique, shorthand and how to take minutes. Some of the more general skills, which are really important in today’s office, are the advanced IT skills relating to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook. In addition to all of this, we are taught about Marketing and Social Media Marketing.

During the past week, with thanks to the help of Bain & Gray, I have been lucky to have been given the opportunity to work with McKinsey and to see how all of this is put into practice in a busy working environment. The week I have spent there has been invaluable.  I spent my time there shadowing some of the Executive Assistants and learning about the company. This has given me a realistic insight into the day-to-day duties of a PA and has confirmed to me that this is what I want to do. It really has been extremely helpful and interesting and I am now looking forward with more confidence to taking the next step.  Throughout my week at McKinsey I was given a huge amount of support as I was guided through the company and shown how they operate on all levels.

I feel privileged to have met such lovely people and to have worked at such a wonderful company. The whole experience has been extremely beneficial and I now feel better prepared for life as a PA! I would like to give thanks to Bain & Gray for helping to make my experience relaxed and yet professional.
